Statistics confirm that in all age groups over 65, women consistently outnumbered men, reflecting their longer life expectancy. Between 65 to 74 years there were 10.2 million women to 7.9 million men. Between 75 to 84 years there were 6.3 million women to 3.8 million men. Of those 85 years or older, 2.2 million were women and 858,000 men. The largest concentration of older women was in the northern Midwest, the northwestern coast, Florida and the northeast. Alaska, Hawaii, and the west and middle western states had the smallest populations, with between 4.6 to 12.5 per cent of women aged 65 years or older.
